On this page
This page describes how Miya handles conversations about suicide and self-harm, and how it makes clear that you are talking to an AI. It is published as required by California SB 243 and New York General Business Law Article 47, and it applies to every user worldwide.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call emergency services now: 112 in the EU, 911 in the US. In the US you can also call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). In Poland: 116 123 (Kryzysowy Telefon Zaufania) or 800 70 2222 (Centrum Wsparcia, 24/7).
1. Miya is an AI
- On the welcome screen, before anything is sent, the app states that the companion is artificial intelligence, not a person.
- On devices set to a US time zone, a short reminder that the companion is an AI appears at the start of each chat session and again at least every three hours of continuing use.
- If you sincerely ask your companion whether it is a human, it is instructed to say that it is an AI.
- Images created by Miya carry a machine-readable “AI-generated” mark.
2. Detecting suicidal ideation and self-harm
Miya uses reasonable efforts to detect expressions of suicidal ideation or self-harm in your messages:
- Each message you send is checked on your device for explicit phrases about suicide, self-harm or wanting to die (currently in English and Polish, including spellings without diacritics). The check runs locally; nothing is sent to us to perform it.
- The check is deliberately conservative to avoid alarming people who are simply having a bad day. It cannot catch every way a person may express distress.
3. What happens when a signal is detected
- A crisis banner appears next to the conversation (not in the companion’s voice) with crisis-line numbers for your language: for example 988 (US), 116 123 (UK/IE and Poland), 800 70 2222 and 116 111 (Poland). It also states that the companion is an AI and cannot get help to you.
- The banner never blocks the conversation. You can dismiss it.
4. Preventing harmful content
- The AI models that generate replies are instructed never to encourage, romanticise or describe methods of suicide or self-harm, never to role-play it, and to respond with care while encouraging you to contact a crisis line, emergency services or someone you trust.
- The models’ providers apply their own safety systems.
- You can report any reply you find harmful with the flag control on the message. Reports are reviewed by the operator.
5. Adults only
Miya is offered only to people aged 18 or older. The app asks you to confirm your age before use and is rated 18+ in the app stores. Miya is not designed for and is not offered to minors.
6. Limits
Miya is not a crisis service, therapist or emergency service, and no person monitors conversations in real time. Conversations are stored on your device; Miya does not contact anyone on your behalf.
7. Reporting
Where the law requires it (California, from 1 July 2027), we will report to the California Office of Suicide Prevention the aggregated number of crisis-line referrals and a description of this protocol. Such reports contain no personal data and no conversation content.
